The annual Ladue blood drive held allowed students and teachers the opportunity to donate blood to benefit people in hospitals across the country Feb. 24. The event has been organized by the Red Cross Club for the past two years and is sponsored by math teacher Laura Kaufman.

The event is meant to be more convenient for students who may not have the opportunity to go to a blood bank to donate. President Francesca DiCera of the Red Cross Club thinks it’s a great way to give back to people in need.

“We have a blood drive because it’s an opportunity for people to donate blood at school,” DiCera said. “We think it’s an important way to help the community and it’s an easy way to make a big difference in someone’s life.”

A student has to be at least 16 years old to donate. After that, the blood is processed and tested by the American Red Cross before being used.

“I’m donating blood because it feels like the right thing to do. There is a consistent need for blood in most hospitals,” first time blood donor Leanna Feng said. “I feel like I am making a difference by doing something pretty simple.”

Although this is her first time donating, Feng isn’t afraid. She knows that this will help the lives of people who need the blood.

“As a child I’ve never been scared of needles, so I’m not that scared.” Feng said. “For me, giving blood is just a few minutes out of my day, but for many patients in need it could possibly save their life. The only way for there to be a steady supply of blood for hospitals and clinics is if people donate.”
