Entrance into art

Collage is a simple first project for beginner artists

Collage is the gateway into art. Diving into the field of art can be intimidating, to say the least. When other people have been practicing longer than you have, it can be easy to get caught up in comparing your skills to theirs. It is difficult to evolve as an artist when you are focusing on your shortcomings. This is where collaging comes in.

Everyone can collage. It does not require talent in drawing or painting, just creativity. By cutting out images from a magazine, you take artwork that already exists and make it your own. Rearranging words and pictures lets you learn to break the rules and lean into your creativity. Adding small doodles within your collage allows you to practice your drawing skills without the daunting commitment of a bigger piece.

Collaging is a form of artwork that is available to most people. All you need is a piece of paper, glue and some magazines. These items are found in most households, making collages an accessible art form. You do not have to buy new supplies like you would with other creative pursuits such as sculpting, painting and beading.

There is no need to be scared to enter the art world anymore. Collaging is the perfect stepping stone to hone your skills and warm up your brain for creative thinking. It allows you to be present and challenge your mind like other art forms do, but it does not come with the added pressure to be perfect. There are no measurable skills within collaging that you can compare with others, so your collage is truly your own.
