It was about 4:15 p.m. when debate practice ended and I was finally ready to go home for the day. Eagerly packing up my laptop, I scurried towards my designated Uber driver and Panorama in-depth editor, Joanne Sung. However, as we walked to her car with some other companions, she notified me that we were taking a detour to Starbucks. Sounds great — nothing better than some coffee to prepare for my daily after school nap.
When we stepped foot into the establishment, I immediately noticed the crowded tables and wandering conversations. It seemed as if every person was there — high school students studying for an upcoming test, adults preparing for an afternoon meeting, children walking around wreaking havoc. However, combined with the dim lighting and white brick walls, the screams provided somewhat of a comforting environment. Environment: 9/10
The service was relatively fast considering the overwhelming number of customers and the total of three dedicated baristas behind the counter. Unfortunately, there was a rather unlucky event that bumps down the service rating by a couple points. As my driver, Joanne Sung, received her drink (a Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino), I instantly saw a grievous mistake shining on the label. There, out in the open for everyone to see, was her name — “Joean”. Service: 7/10
After receiving my cinnamon coffee cake and Caramel Ribbon Crunch Frappuccino (quite an ambitious name), my companions and I made the groundbreaking decision to enjoy our drinks outside. In the windy, 50 degrees Fahrenheit weather. Considering that three out of the four of us decided to order Frappuccinos, it wasn’t the best idea in the world.
Fortunately, my food was delectable. The cinnamon coffee cake didn’t necessarily agree with its name with almost invisible hints of coffee. Still, the cake had a nice crumble on the exterior which provided an enjoyable texture. Also, the slight warmth that emitted from the good was much appreciated. Cinnamon coffee cake: 9/10
Unfortunately, the same remarks cannot be made about the Caramel Ribbon Crunch Frappuccino. After taking the first sip, the texture of the drink seemed more liquidy rather than the usual icey and crunchy feel that comes with a Frappuccino. On the other hand, the taste was pleasant and not overwhelmingly sweet, an obvious coffee flavor coating my mouth. Eventually, the texture improved with the top containing small caramel bits that brought a unique touch. However, this drink immediately eliminated any warmth gained from the cake. Caramel Ribbon Crunch Frappuccino: 3/10
Overall, this Starbucks journey was a splendid experience with highs and lows and countless laughs with my companions and Joanne Sung. Despite the frigid weather combined with an iced drink, it was definitely an afternoon to remember.
