Preseason practices for the track and field team began recently in preparation for their first track meet. Coach and English teacher Nick Buckvar has had a love of the sport since high school–leading to his position at Ladue today.
“I was a track athlete in high school,” Buckvar said. “I had never done it before high school, but once I started I just fell in love with the sport and had great coaches and mentors. I was good at it and had the opportunity to run in college, and [it] became the sport that I love the most and wanted to coach.”
There are certain traits that Buckvar looks for in track athletes. Buckvar wants to help every athlete be able to hone their skills through practice.
“A track athlete [is] somebody that is most importantly open to learning track,” Buckvar said. “Regardless of the event, there’s so much to learn, everything from understanding why they’re doing certain types of training, to learning new skills, or drill work. People that pay attention to details, and people that in general are reliable and will put in work.”
