The Best Kind of Delivery: Custom made cookies ready for order from the Delmar Loop

Nothing is better than the smell of a freshly baked cookie; it’s as simple as that. We’ve all grown up with cookies baking in the oven at some point. They seem to be a conventional snack food, good any time of the day, but what if you could take it a step further?

Dough to Door is a way for you to take that step. Opened August 5 by managing partners Jonathan Weinberg, Ernest Dixon and Tamika Moore in the Delmar Loop, it offers made-to-order cookies, both traditional style and custom made. Even better? They deliver.

Located off a side street in between Blueberry Hill and Vintage Vinyl, I visited the store on a dreary Saturday afternoon with two other friends, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. Did they only serve cookies? What was so cool about that? But just by taking a look at the chalk board style menu, I was easily sold. I soon learned that there was much more to choose from than the mundane chocolate chip cookie.

Dough to Door allows for creativity; meaning customers can design cookies right over the counter. The first step: select the type of dough you want, trust me there are plenty. They offer plain, sugar, oatmeal, peanut butter or even chocolate dough. Second and most enjoyable step: select your mix-ins. You can choose from over twenty mix-ins including M&Ms, snickers, pistachios, peanut butter cups, marshmallows, peppermint patties, Oreos and so on. They also offer free “extras” like icing, sprinkles, chocolate chips and caramel syrup.

My only concern with the bakery was the time it took to make my custom order. It was a forty minute so I recommend ordering ahead of time if you want a custom order. If you just want to stop by, they have plenty of pre-made cookies to choose from, but the best part of my experience was the freedom to choose what I wanted in a cookie. And if you do have to wait, they have plenty of games like Yahtzee, Connect 4 and, a Ladue favorite, Apples to Apples.

After our wait, they brought out our individual boxes of cookies. The smell of freshly baked cookies was overwhelming. Within my box was the simple chocolate chip cookie plus plain cookie dough with Kit Kat. I told myself I would only eat one cookie, just for the review, but ended up eating three.

That should tell you something. The cookies were more than I expected; warm and soft to the touch and completely mouth watering with each bite. If you decide to visit, and I recommend you do, don’t get your cookies without milk! It might sound juvenile, cookies and milk as a midnight snack, but it’s simply delicious. A bite of a warm cookie then a swig of ice cold milk… heavenly. They offer a combo deal, a half-dozen box of cookies and a milk for $7.25.

So let me emphasize my point: If you’re bored of milkshakes and ice cream as a late night snack, try something new like custom made cookies from Dough to Door. Thursday through Saturday they’re open from noon until 2AM. Did you get that? You can order cookies in the middle of night!

Though they only deliver to the surrounding University City area, WashU campus, and parts of Clayton, it’s still a great place to hang out on the weekends. The atmosphere is very relaxed and inviting. So I urge you, try a cookie and I can maybe guarantee you’ll fall in love with cookies all over again.
