Margaret Shapiro, coach of the girls varsity tennis team, smiles at her team and announces, “we’re going to state!”
The girls varsity tennis team played in the MSHSAA Sectionals Tournament Oct. 12, earning a spot at the MSHSAA State Tournament.
“I thought we were efficient and strong and did what we needed to do,” Shapiro said. “I feel relieved [that we’re going to state]. I feel like the girls deserve it.”
The team won against Capital City High School, located in Jefferson City, MO. The day before, the girls had made the commute to Jefferson City, only to be rained out within minutes of arriving. The additional day spent on the road gave the girls an extra kick of motivation.
“I think we all played strong,” freshman Balkis Prothro said. “We all communicate really well together and have fun which creates a strong bond with each other.
It was a close match filled with ups and downs, but the team ultimately triumphed with a record of 5-1: two wins in doubles, one loss in singles and three wins in doubles.
“We had some difficulties but we came through and made it through as a team,” Prothro said. “I’m excited for state and I’m looking forward to the competition and hopefully coming out with a win.”
The team will embark on the final leg of the season at the MSHSAA State Tournament Oct. 22 and 23 in Springfield, MO.
“I’m looking forward to watching [the girls] experience the state tournament,” Shapiro said. “I’m proud of the kids.”
