Nothing tops that feeling you get when an overly excited human greets you with a “happy national (insert pointless topic) day!” as you walk into the halls of Ladue HS at the bright and early hour of 7 in the morning. Barely processing and clearly half awake, this celebration is pretty uncalled for. Let’s be real: the last thing on your mind during these ungodly early morning hours is to celebrate a national day for some random bird you’ve never heard of, nor want to hear more about.
While this is the case with about 98% of the national days, there are a few gems within the mix of pretty pointless days. I’ve compiled a list of the top 3 most important (and should be celebrated and appreciated!) national days of the year to restore some of that lost hope in humanity.
In 3rd place, we have national “Ditch New Year’s Resolution Day.” You know that feeling when you realize you were WAY too ambitious and believed that a ball dropping in New York or writing a 2 instead of a 1 at the end of the date would make you a completely new person? Well, for the majority of the population who set resolutions and end up dropping that ball by mid-January, this day is for them! With less than 3 weeks into the New Year, January 17th is perfect for this national day. Right around the time when people realize they haven’t even thought about their resolution(s) for about a week, it’s perfect timing to celebrate big — say goodbye to those pesky new year’s resolutions and bid farewell to that “new year, new you” motto you carried with you for about… what? two days (if that).
In 2nd place, we have national “Lost Sock Memorial Day.” Before I begin, let’s please take a moment for all those lost socks under the bed, hidden with all the dog toys, or chilling at the bottom of those shirts you haven’t touched since 2018. While in theory, May 9th is a day meant to encourage you to spend some time searching for those missing socks, let’s be real… they’re long gone. I know, it socks! (get it?) Instead, I recommend using this day to take a minute to reflect on the warmth and comfort those socks provided you. Take a moment to appreciate that drawer full of unmatched socks and instead of tearing up at the lone pairs, let the words of famous philosophers ring in your ears: not all who are alone, are lonely.
And lastly, in 1st place, we have national “Wiggle Your Toes Day.” Yep, you read that right. This magical holiday on August 6th is perhaps the most important national pointless day. You’ve heard of leg day. You’ve heard of arm day. Even jaw exercises are making their way to the surface. But what about toes? Not only are your toes practically crying out for freedom from being cramped inside your shoes for countless hours days upon days, but they are so often forgotten when it comes to exercise and body health. Some may claim this is rightfully so, but I urge you to take a moment on that day and let yourself know true freedom and joy by wiggling your toes. It’ll toe-tally change your life and you’ll find yourself on that #don’tskiptoeday trend for years to come.
