The Language Honor Societies at Ladue Horton Watkins High School hosted a soccer game Oct. 5, 11 a.m., at the Ladue Middle School soccer field, which consisted of the German, Latin, French, and Spanish Honor Societies. This event occurred as a fun way for students in these honor societies to gain a meeting point.
“It was really fun. There was a lot of inclusion. Everyone was able to get the ball at some point. And most of all, the vibes were there. The vibes were pretty high,” said Alex Wang, a junior in the Spanish Honor Society.
The honor societies here have prerequisites for joining. Students must complete three years of one of the four languages and take the fourth year the following year. Students will receive an application to join an honor society at the end of their third year. If accepted, they’ll have to participate and accumulate a certain amount of service and meeting points.
“I’m currently in Spanish Four. This year is my first official year being in [Spanish Honor Society], but I did apply last year, and I did get in last year,” Wang said.
The soccer game happened between two teams, the Spanish and Latin versus the German and French Honor Societies. These teams were made to be fair for both sides as the two sides would be similar in terms of the number of players.
“The teams were the Spanish and the Latin, so the biggest group and the smallest group, versus the German and the French, which were both kinda in the middle, so the numbers matched up pretty nicely,” Wang said.
Overall, the game was competitive and resulted in a positive outcome for both sides, as all the players ended up enjoying the thrill of the event, with the German and French team barely taking the win.
“The German and French team barely edged out. At halftime, it was Four-Zero, and we had a pretty good effort in trying to bring it back, but ultimately it ended up being Five-Four in favor of the German and French,” Wang said.
Despite the close loss that occurred in the soccer game, the players remained in a positive mood.
“It was a lot of fun. We got donuts afterwards. No one was really mad or was really disappointed after, everyone felt like they had a good time,” Wang said.
