Sept. 26 at Blue and White Night at the high school stadium the junior girls will take on the previous victors of the Powderpuff game, the seniors.
Every year the junior girls put up a fight in a flag football matchup against the senior girls but never leave victorious. Last year, the unexpected happened: the junior class won. Now the new junior class is hungry to repeat this phenomenon and beat the reigning victors. Molly Salvatori (11) is planning on playing in the Powderpuff game this year and shares her expectations.
“I’m hoping that we win,” Salvatori (11) said. “I know last year they won as juniors, so I’m hoping we can do the same to them this year.”
Salvatori is unphased by the clear manipulation of the game to help the seniors’ feat. A member of this year’s Blue Crew, Peyton O’Shaughnessy (12), participated in the Powderpuff game last year and is playing again.
“I think that in some ways, they [the juniors know] that we still are going to try and win,” O’Shaughnessy said. “But maybe now, since the juniors won last year, they think they’ll have a chance.”
Even though the Powderpuff game can get competitive, it is a great event for people to go to. It allows students to express school spirit as a precursor to the homecoming football game.
“I think [Powderpuff] forces us all to work together as a team and come together as a grade,” Salvatori said.
There has been talk about Powderpuff for weeks now and anticipation is only growing. Especially with last year’s shocking outcome, the seniors have a pressure to keep up their winning streak.
“[I’m most excited about] having fun and getting to play under the lights with all of my classmates,” O’Shaughnessy said. “I think it’s just something special that we get to do, and it’s our senior year.”
