The week of Feb. 11, Ladue’s FemCo club raised money selling valentines to donate to Safe Connects, a local domestic abuse shelter.
Betlehime Gema (12) has been leading the club for two years. She feels that the club has made a positive impact on not only the Ladue community, but other areas as well.
“FemCo is very community oriented and we all work together to create a sense of belonging with women in our community,” Gema said. “Everyone is welcome, we have worked really hard to make it an intersectional movement where everyone is recognized and heard.”
While the club has many different fundraisers, their most prominent is the Valentine’s Day fundraiser. The club has a table located in the lunchroom where students are able to purchase roses, chocolate, candy grams and raffle tickets, raisng money and supporting the cause.
“The Valentine’s Day fundraiser is something we’ve done for the past three years,” Revathy Vishnubholta (12) said. “Our main goal is to raise money for Safe Connections, which is an organization that helps women in domestic abuse shelters.”
In addition to fundraising, the club also partakes in feminist conversations.
“FemCo is a really good club, and I think if you really want to get your foot into politics and you really want to start learning about gender disparities, FemCo is a great way to start,” Vishnubholta said. “I think it’s been very insightful for my high school journey, and I think it can help other people.”
