‘Due Designs

Graphic Design students create logos for Due Brew

Periodical clicking of computer mice and quiet chatter fills the classroom of Graphic Design. Shapes are methodically traced from reference photos and filled with color, arranged piece by piece to create a composition.  Taught by art teacher Emily Hogan, students learn to navigate Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator to produce creative projects. “Right now we’re designing some logos for Due Brew, they bring coffee to teachers on Monday and they also do dog treats on Friday.” said Abby Hellmann (9).

A Toast to 2024
Percussion students listen to feedback on their playing of the piece “The Lost” from Percussion teacher Elstner. Concert and symphonic percussion classes have different pieces to play for Night of Percussion. “We start practicing this early because we have limited amounts of rehearsals. Time runs out very quickly for us especially since this year we have four long pieces to play that require lots of practice and coordination between all players,” Hiken said.
Concert Customs
Previous students' works are displayed in the photography classroom. They focused on various environmental issues, from conservation to climate change. “The environmental students were in charge of coming up with the content and writing the vision statement, and then my photo students were in charge of teaching them some of the art elements and principles of how to be persuasive with your photographs," Warner said.

Displaying Diversity
The VEX Robotics team traveled to Troy Buchanan High School Jan. 26 for the Troy Winter Classic tournament consisting of 48 teams across Missouri high schools. Schools can send up to six teams to compete. Three out of four of the VEX Robotics teams competed in this event, and Team “Gheese,” led by Rex Zhu (11) and Ben Reiser (11), placed third and qualified for the state tournament. “I’m very excited,” team leader Reiser said. “This year’s game has a huge hang structure in the center that not really anyone has gone for. Almost all the matches are 40 or 50 points higher because of how the scoring works differently.”
News to Know
Claire Yates (9) and Serenity Xu (9) decorate posters for the Valentine’s Day fundraiser. FemCo held a meeting with members Jan. 23 to create decorations. “I’m looking forward to being a part of a club that’s doing a fundraiser,” Yates said.

Superintendent Jim Wipke's Student Advisory Committee takes a selfie at the Board of Education meeting Jan. 29. They had presented "Flip the Script," an initiative to curb student drug use. “There is a problem with drugs in our society,” member Alexandra Tsygankov (12) said. “Whether you see it or not, it needs to be addressed.”
Board Update
Jake Winograd and Hobey Alton stand in the courtroom after their first Mock Trial competition. Winograd joined the club this year and prepared for months for the big day. "I was super excited but a bit nervous for the first trial, we lost but it was a good learning experience," Winograd said.
