AP World teacher Dr. Eric Hahn won the Peabody Leaders in Education Award Oct. 17.  As the Peabody consultants entered his room, they presented him with an oversized check worth $1000 to spend as he chooses.
“We are honoring Dr. Hahn as a leader in education,” Maureen Moore, Peabody energy consultant and program director said.
According to those who surround him, Hahn fits that role very well.  Not only do other teachers admire his excellence, but his students consider the class unforgettable.Posing for the camera, Dr. Eric Hahn holds his awarded check. Next to him are (from the left) Dr. Hermann, Maureen Moore, Peabody energy consultants, Dr. Chappelow and Dr. Good.
“He means the world to me, like literally AP World.  He was one of the best teachers because he had a different style of teaching where you could tell he actually cared about what he was teaching,” junior Maria Vetter said.
Dr. Rob Good was also present to watch his colleague receive the award.  He nominated Hahn by writing a two-paged recommendation letter for this honor.
“Dr. Good said that ‘Eric is a teacher’s teacher.  To sit in his classroom is to watch a master at work,’” Moore said.
KMOX announced Hahn’s achievement Monday night during Drive Time, and Peabody’s website also featured him.  In addition, St. Louis Business Journal recognized Hahn.“I’m really excited about organizations that support teachers,” Hahn said.
Along with the Peabody consultants and Dr. Good, Dr. Chappelow, Dr. Duncan, and Dr. Hermann were also present at the time he received the award.  They each expressed their fondness and pride for Hahn.
“We are very proud of Dr. Hahn,” Hermann said.
After he set the check down, Hahn gathered his students in the back of the room
for a group picture, amidst a background of a ceiling-to-floor world map, a fitting image for the successful history teacher.  He then expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the check, along with his bond for his students.
“Without students, this would not be possible,” Hahn said. The impression Hahn leaves on his students stays with them for many years.  He strives to provide the same passion and zest for history that his kids inspire in him.
“He made me want to learn instead of having to sit there and have to read,” Vetter said.  “He’s the kind of guy who is actually invested in his students, whether it’s teaching us about the Mongols or constantly making us laugh.  We are so lucky to have him.”
