The film Divergent opened March 21 with a bang and, according to Fox News, made $22.8 million on Friday alone.
Divergent takes place in a world where everyone fits into factions based on the personality traits of intelligence, selflessness, courage, peacefulness, and honesty. However, Tris, the protagonist, doesn’t fit into just one of these categories, making her a Divergent. The government tries to rid the world of Divergents, believing them to be a threat to the fragile system that humanity has created.
The movie contains several action-filled fighting scenes, making the movie seem short (despite the 140 minute runtime). Additionally, the plot was captivating and the actors’ performances were believable. Shailene Woodley did a particularly excellent job playing a strong-willed girl, ditching her earlier, most well-known work being a teenage mother on “The Secret Life of the American Teenager.”
One flaw in the movie was that two important characters – Peter and Will – looked very similar, and as someone who had not read the book, it became difficult to differentiate between the two. Because of this, the plot was harder to follow since Peter was Tris’ enemy, and Will was Tris’ friend throughout the movie.
Overall, despite a few flaws throughout the movie (and the fact that it couldn’t quite match up to The Hunger Games), this movie was certainly good enough to join the list of great teen fiction films.
