In the Spanish hallway, students made decorations that represent the celebration for the Day of the Dead. Each box was personally made by a student for a celebrity or a loved one that passed away. “[And for] each of their boxes, they needed to have pictures and items that loved one enjoyed,” DeLia said.

Question: What is your name and what do you teach at Ladue?
Answer: My name is Mary DeLia and I teach Spanish 2 and 3.
Question: Why is the Day of the Dead celebrated?
Answer: The Day of the Dead is a celebration to remember loved ones that have passed away. It’s a day to take time and remember their favorite foods, things they used to do. It also gives the family members or people that were close to them a time to feel like their spirits come back to be with them.
Question: How do Ladue students participate in the celebration?
Answer: For my students, they choose a loved one or a famous person that has passed away and they want to honor. Then they write a paragraph about their lives and decorate a shoe box.
Question: What items are found in an altar?
Answer: The items needed in an altar usually are a picture of the person who passed away, candles, flowers and more favorite items of the loved one. But for my class specifically the writing is also included in the boxes. And after arranging the boxes on the table, more decorations are brought in to add beauty to it.
Question: What can you get out of your students for this project?
Answer: I get to know my students a little bit better based on what they choose and who they are interested in. And it’s also an exciting activity for students to engage in and have fun along the way.
