The unemployment rate decreased to 7.8% in September from 8.1% in August, according to the U.S. Labor Department, Oct. 5.
The Labor Department reported that the economy added 114,000 jobs in September, and were revised upward by 40,000 for July and 42,000 for August.
In contrast to previous reports, the New York times stated Oct. 5 that the unemployment rate declined because more people were working, not because disillusioned workers stopped searching for jobs.
The news may be a positive for President Barack Obama, who debated Republican challenge Mitt Romney Oct. 5 in what many commentators have described as a lackluster performance. CBS said Oct. 5 that Obama referenced the jobs numbers at a rally in Fairfax, Virginia, saying that “this country has come too far to turn back now.” #
