DECA and the Free Enterprise Economics class are planning a unique fundraiser in preparation for the upcoming homecoming game. They offer students the opportunity to smash a car painted in Affton colors with a sledgehammer.
“At lunch and Academic Lab you can buy tickets to hit the car,” junior Michael Ehrlich said. “It was our class idea and we decided to do it.”
Tickets will be sold starting Tuesday Sept. 27 in the Commons. One dollar will buy two hits and two dollars will buy five. The car itself will be in the south lot by the fields.
“’Beat’ Affton is a DECA class fundraiser to promote school spirit,” Free Enterprise Economics teacher Frances Erwin said. “The proceeds for this fundraiser help DECA students attend team building and leadership conferences as well as marketing District, State and International workshops and competitions.”
The fundraiser precedes the homecoming game for the football team against Affton Oct. 1 at 1:00 pm. The car itself had to be worked on before it could be open for smashing.
“The car was found by Mr. Stephen Schmidt, Practical Arts teacher. We had to get the glass removed for safety reasons and then we spent time each class painting it. It was a lot of work, but we pulled it off,” junior Leah Rothberg said.
