The Gateway to the West has always been seen as a city full of diverse culture. The people of this city have great pride in communal events, especially when it comes to sports. Currently, the two professional sport teams that are located here in St. Louis are the Cardinals and the Blues.
About two years ago, there was a spark of interest by the town to invest in a professional Major League Soccer team (MLS). Because the Rams had moved to Los Angeles earlier in the year, people thought a new franchise could be just what the need to cheer up its spirits. This new investment by the city was proposed to be paid by a tax on St. Louis residents, which could total up to $60 million. Even though hype for a potential team continued to grow, the vote for the new tax was shot down by the city of St. Louis. This seemed as it would be the end of the soccer fanatics chances to receive an MLS team.
However, a new light of hope shined on the city of St. Louis, as rumors of bringing in a new team have just started up again. This time, the city has a new strategy to try to get their new franchise passed. Instead of having residents of the city pay out of their own pocket, now it seems as though private investors will be leading the charge. The family behind the Clayton Enterprise Holdings Inc. is the private organization resurrecting the push for a new team. Adding on to that, a number of many other unknown private businesses are also thinking of sponsoring this team, as they think it will bring great economic prowess to the city.
While the MLS agrees that St. Louis has the potential to be one of its expansion cities, many things are still unknown about whether this new investment will happen, or if it is the growth of yet another rumor.
