It’s no secret that I’m a sucker for a good romantic comedy. So, when I saw the commercials for the new movie “Pitch Perfect,” I knew I had to see it.
Starring “Twilight” actress Anna Kendrick, “Hairspray” star Brittany Snow and “Bridesmaids” newcomer Rebel Wilson, this film seemed sure to entertain. The film opens on Beca (Kendrick) as she start her freshman year of college with one word of advice from her dad: try something new. When Beca is coerced into joining the “Barden Bellas,” she follows her father’s advice and soon proves her ability to sing and compete alongside the best. In true rom-com fashion, Beca finds not just an outlet for her vocal talent but romance in the form Jesse (Skylar Astin).
Almost every scene had me laughing out loud. The writers used clever acapella puns to add a recurring humorous element. This movie has all the essentials of a romantic comedy, including an eventual romance and some eye-candy (Stroma and Astin) to enjoy as well.
As Beca, Kendrick consistently impresses. I was surprised to find that not only can Kendrick act, but she can sing – and rap – too. Every song she performed, was, well, excuse the pun, pitch perfect. I especially enjoyed her duet on “Titanium,” which was as beautiful as all of the film’s musical performances.
Kendrick’s fellow actors also shine. Wilson, a relative newcomer to acting, was especially impressive as “Fat Amy.” Throughout the film, Wilson is truly a comedic superstar, holding her own against her famous counterparts. Every quip she replies is a winner that will cause you to burst out laughing.
With every song performed in the movie, the music was so infectious that I wanted to get up and dance. I could go on and on about musical performances in the film. Jesse’s rendition of “Since U Been Gone” was another standout performance, as was the “Bellas’” performance of “Party in the USA.” I especially loved the rendition of “Just the Way You Are/ Just a Dream,” which was beautifully done.
Though many of the actors were unfamiliar to singing roles, they still managed to pull it off. Even Bellas’ lead singer Chloe (Snow) has a good voice. Jesse’s voice during “Bright Lights Big City/ Magic in Me” stood out as really strong, especially for a newcomer to acting. The cast’s impressive musical talent, combined with smart song selections, should thrill any acapella fan.
It’s a testament to the strength of the film that I left the theatre without anything negative to say. If you’re in the mood for music, “Pitch Perfect” is the film for you. #
