The Ladue Rams clinched a playoff spot after a 35-6 victory Oct. 27. The win came against the U-City Lions, led by receiver Alex Henry. This season, Henry has caught passes for 1,143 yards and has scored 14 touchdowns. However, the Rams managed to constrain Henry and the U-City offense, allowing just six points.
Senior linebacker Aaron Purnell has been a defensive leader all year for the Rams. He wanted this game to be a night to remember.
“We all knew this was a do or die game. Had we lost, most of the seniors’ careers would have been over, and all we wanted to do was keep playing together. It felt awesome to get this win, and now we have to focus on Vashon,” Purnell said.
On offense, Ladue scored 35 points, despite playing without running back Deavin Edwards. Edwards is St. Louis area’s leading rusher with 1579 yards. Senior running back Daylen Dean instead took the helm Friday, rushing for 124 yards on only nine carries. In addition, senior fullback Mike Horton-Lofton and senior quarterback Brandon Carr converted short touchdown runs. Together they earned a 14-0 lead in the game in the first quarter.
“I wanted to try and help the team any way that I could, whether it be on the ground or by passing. Fortunately, it resulted in a win for us,” Carr said,
Although the third quarter went scoreless, the Rams exploded for three unanswered touchdowns in the fourth. They effectively destroyed the Lions with runs, including a 43 yard rush by Dean and a four yard run by junior running back Shawn Whitley.
The Rams also beat Vashon Nov. 12. After that win, the team looked to extend their playoff run against MICDS Nov. 7. However, their season came to an end that night after a devastating comeback by MICDS in the final quarter.
