The Ladue Rams football team battled its way to a 46-21 victory Oct. 21, despite only being up by one touchdown at the half.
Early in the game, senior running back Deavin Edwards sustained an injury, and it is unclear when he will be able to return. However, Ladue head coach Mike Tarpey is unfazed about losing one of his best players.
“Tonight we had guys step up when they needed to. I’m extremely proud of the way we battled through adversity. Shawn (Whitley) and Mike (Horton-Lofton) did an excellent job tonight, so I think they can pick up the slack if they need to. We are all looking forward to next week’s game,” Tarpey said.
Coupled with a solid ground attack by both senior fullback Mike Horton-Lofton and junior running back Shawn Whitley, each gaining an average of six yards per rush, senior quarterback Brandon Carr took over the game with flashy stats. Carr completed 10 of 18 throws for 236 yards and four touchdowns. Also, junior wide receiver Chase Lambie had a 60-yard touchdown reception.
“The big reason I was able to do well tonight was the offensive line. We have great protection, as well as great receivers, so all of my teammates really make my job that much easier. It was great to beat Clayton as a senior, and to keep our playoff hopes going,” Carr said.
Ladue’s defense held Clayton to 21 points, forced two interceptions, and one touchdown fumble recovery by junior linebacker Adehkeem Brown.
“Their quarterback just lost control of the ball, and I saw it in the air and ran it in. It was definitely a special play,” Brown said.
The Rams gained confidence by defeating their bitter rival, and plan to keep the tradition alive in coming years.
