There’s always that one friend within a group that makes everyone laugh. They’re witty, have great timing with snarky comments, and may or may not be offensive sometimes. But you forgive them because they’re just so darn charismatic. The memoir, “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns),” by Emmy-nominated writer of “The Office,” Mindy Kaling, reminds you of just how much you love that friend.
I read the book over winter break, the perfect time to read such a book and instantly fell in love with Kaling all over again. I had seen her on the NBC comedy, “The Office,” as the shallow, hilarious, girly-girl that is Kelly Kapoor, but didn’t realize just how involved she was on the show.
The essays in her memoir address her eccentric experiences from growing up in an Indian household to making it big in Los Angeles. The chapters also provide interesting side notes on her personality, like the essay “My Favorite Moments in Comedy.” It was enjoyable to hear such an honest voice from a celebrity. She went in depth about the insecurities she felt about her appearance as a child to the doubts she had about making it as a TV writer.
I thoroughly enjoyed Kaling’s trademark wit; I actually found myself laughing at loud at times. The style of her writing almost makes it seem like she’s speaking to you firsthand. And once you reach the end, you’ll be able to realize just how much you enjoy her company. #
