Students ran to windows, disrupting class first period Friday Sept. 16, when a large red and white balloon made an unexpected landing on the football practice field at approximately 8:10 a.m. Many teachers allowed their students to watch the landing, or saw it themselves if they were not in class.
“I first heard the air of the balloon when I was in the parking lot. It went right over the west gym, and kind of looked like it was going to hit the gym, but it got over the building then landed on the track. They were trying to get it away from the fence because it was too close. The guy holding the attachment was keeping the balloon down on the ground. The balloon master lit up to clear the fence and moved it to the football practice field,” English teacher Wendy Guhr said.
Another balloon called the Spirit of Curves, sponsored by the Curves store, landed at MICDS around the same time the PNC Bank balloon landed at the high school. Winds led the Curves balloon far from its target landing at Washington University. Both the PNC and Curves balloons will be featured tonight in the Forest Park Balloon Glow, as well as the Forest Park Balloon Race Sept. 17. #
