The experimental noise of JPEGMAFIA’s industrial style can be a bizarre and heavy difference to what many are used to in the music world. With some tracks that could be argued to be more closer to metal than your stereotypical influences. To me, his album Veteran was an opening to a new taste of sound. The tracklist begins with one of his most mainstream and easily consumable songs, ‘1539 N. Calvert’, but this doesn’t stop the track from being amongst my favorites. From the quick hype noises of Real Nega, the harsh blares of Baby I’m Bleeding, to the vibe-filled echoes of Rainbow Six, the album is filled with a variety of strange noises that coalesce into a project better than the sum of its parts. I’d rate this project a low nine out of ten.
His next album, My Heroes are Cornballs, is in my opinion just as good. From front to back, the project both seems more cohesive while sticking to the bizarre and twisted sounds a fan would be used to. Slower songs like ‘Free The Frail’ mesh with heavier beats like ‘Beta Male Strategies’. The opening track, ‘Jesus Forgive Me, I Am A Thot’, is one of my favorite tracks on the album. Overall, I’d rate this project a high eight out of ten.
His EP’s are just as good, EP! and EP2! have outstanding standout tracks, like COVERED IN MONEY! Or BALD, both around a decent eight out of ten.
Wrapping up, if you want something new or different for your ears, or you like a harsher, more experimental sound in hip-hop, try out JPEGMAFIA. He is a great influence upon hip-hop in general, growing more and more as the years go on. As an artist, all in all I’d rate him an eight out of ten.
