Fall Fashion: Combining Style and Practicality

Listen to this article

It’s time…

The temperature lowers to a cold but tolerable level. Leaves change from green, to yellow, to red, creating a wonderful picture and a mess of lawns.

It’s time for fall, and you’re just not ready.  Maybe you put it off, and your closet is still full of skirts and tank tops, or you’re just not sure what to wear.

Fall is a special season, in that you can be both stylish and practical.  Think about it- in summer, the world’s 1your oyster when it comes to clothes.  Shorts, skirts, pants, it all works as long as you don’t mind sweating a bit and remember to wear deodorant.

In winter, you have to layer, and that can ruin any outfit.

But have no fear, because here’s a few tips, tricks, and treats to get you fall-ready.

Shirts

Shirts are a tricky part to get right, but here are a few rules to keep in mind.

  1. Long sleeves are for pants and skirts only.
  2. If you’re wearing ripped jeans, wear a tank or t-shirt.
  3. Long sleeves = long earrings.
  4. Sweaters.  Lots and lots of sweaters.  You’ll need them.

Shirts are probably the easiest thing to buy online.  Check out Forever 21, Gap, or ASOS for good style, comfortable fabric, and reasonable pricing.

Shorts?  In fall???

People always think of shorts as a spring or summer sort of thing, but that doesn’t have to be the case.  Chilly weather shouldn’t stop you from wearing shorts. In fact, a cool look can be made by pairing a pair of jean shorts with simple opaque tights.  Plus, you won’t have to shave your legs until spring!

The same rule applies to skirts, but it gives you a little more room for personalization since skirts and tights just go together.  Mix and match.  Clash a little- it’s in.  Sneakers, boots, and heels all work with this outfit.  Add a cute belt, and you’re ready to go.

F is for fall- and for flannel.

Flannel is a staple of the fall aesthetic.  Button it up for the ‘chill but chic’ look, but depending on how thick or warm your flannel is, you might want to wear a t-shirt underneath.  If it starts heating up, then you can just take it off and wrap it around your waist. It works. It absolutely works.

If you’re looking for flannel, check out American Eagle.  They carry it year-round, and have plenty of options online.  Quality is always assured, but the prices are a little high. You get what you pay for, after all.

Pants (but mostly jeans)

Pants are incredible.  They go with everything.  But for no reason should you wear your yoga pants outside of the house and gym.  They might accent your ‘features’, but you need something more than a pencil-thin layer of fabric over you if you don’t want to be constantly shivering.  Complaining doesn’t add to an outfit.

Once again, American Eagle delivers on pants, especially jeans.  They offer a wide range of styles and colors- high waisted, boyfriend, skinny, you name it, they’ve got it.

Makeup

Fall is a perfect time to go for a natural look.  If you’re dead-set on using makeup, use a concealer on the most uneven parts of your face instead of full foundation, and try to stick with nude lipsticks for the season.

Looking for lipstick?  Check out the Sephora website.  Quality varies between brands, but they’re reliable and safe.  Remember, testers in-store carry bacteria and viruses, so be sure to test the color on your hand and not your lips.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER

Red.  Red, red red.  Wear red. Red is the color for fall, since the fall ‘aesthetic’ includes the changing leaves.
