why do some people not celebrate halloween?
Why do some people not celebrate one of the most beloved holidays in America? According to some statistics, 44% of the people who go to church once a week celebrate halloween, 68% of the people that go once or twice a month, and 82% of the people that only go on religious holidays. What do these stats tell us? Religion too plays a key role in why people celebrate and why they don’t. Halloween originally was known as “all hallows eve”, a pagan holiday meant to honor the dead and ward off evil spirits. This was done, along with leaving the doors open to welcome the good spirits. Over time halloween has evolved to be viewed as a secular holiday by the majority of society. For a portion of America though, halloween is more than just fun and games. St. Louis is one of the most religious cities in America, does that mean we don’t celebrate halloween? St. Louis is 23% Catholic, and 75% Christian. Although there are some families who don’t celebrate for secular reasons, the majority of the them don’t take part in halloween, for religious reasons. Religion plays a key role in most other major holidays such as Christmas, passover, easter, and Yom Kippur, but halloween is not usually associated with religion. Halloween does have a religious origin, and is sort of a religious holiday in disguise, or to be more exact, more of a secular one. Religious parents argue that halloween teaches children to embrace evil spirits and embrace the devil, secular families, or families with no beliefs against halloween say that it is all in good fun.
