Winter Wonders

Winter+Wonders

At the beginning of winter break students want to sleep, so for the first few days that is all they do. Overall, school has taken away hours upon hours of necessary sleep this semester. The next few days are filled with binge watching shows, so that when the next season comes out we aren’t behind. Once all the family events are taken care of, you may be left with a few hours or possibly days to enjoy a winter activity in St. Louis.

One of the best ways to embrace the cold is Ice skating. Ever since the rink in Shaw park closed, the prime place to go for outdoor Ice skating is the Steinberg skating rink in Forest park. They are open from 1:30- 9 pm Mondays through Thursdays, 1-11 pm on Fridays, and 11:00 am- 11:00 pm on weekends. The lines get long at night, so planning an extra 30 min to an hour of time into your event is a good idea. Also, don’t forget a warm coat, gloves, a cute hat and two pairs of socks to help combat the cold as you stand in line.

Once you’re too cold to withstand the frigid temperatures for any longer, hop in a car and take a trip to Winter Wonderland in Tilles park to drive through Christmas lights. Each year they put on a spectacle of lights with over 100 displays. They begin setting up the lights in the middle of October, so that they are ready to light up for their opening night. They opened on Nov 24 and will be open until Jan 1. If driving through is too boring, you and a few friends can book a carriage ride. Similar to ice skating, a warm coat, hat, gloves, and a comfy blanket will make the experience a lot more enjoyable.

Another Idea is going out for a sweet treat. I believe that there’s never a time when it’s “too cold” for ice cream. That being said, a trip down to the Central West End is called for to try Jeni’s Ice cream’s holiday flavors. They have one of a kind flavors all year round, and during the holidays, they come out with flavorful new creations. This year’s holiday flavors include Mexican hot chocolate, salted caramel, white chocolate peppermint, and more. Try one or all, if you do leave a comment with your recommendations!
