Sydney+and+THE+pink+journal
Sydney and THE pink journal

You’ve heard of the mysterious girl reading a book on a train trope, but have you heard the mysterious girl with low self esteem writing in her pink journal on a train trope? You haven’t because I made it up. I actually don’t have low self esteem, probably because I started journaling in eighth grade. I either did this just for fun and to see the stories later or just to dump emotion in the moment because I was told it would be helpful.  The stories I discover, that I shall not disclose, are some of the most mundane and occasionally insane. Nothing illegal, just embarrassing. The whole idea for me is just to dump ideas, emotions, stories and anything else on a sheet of paper, not another person.

Sometimes I think it’s unhealthy to only spill your guts on a sheet of paper. Doing this may lead to later lack in skills needed to communicate your concerns or issues with people in the “real world”. That’s because your journal cannot talk back to you. It’s not practice for the “real world” if there’s no one talking back to you.

Although I say this, there actually are benefits that have been studied by the University of Rochester Medical Center that states how your mental health can improve with the use of journaling. Reducing anxiety can be done in many ways, but through journaling there is a way to look back at your life versus just punching a pillow or biting your nails.

There have only been two journals I’ve gone through from eighth grade to now. The first was blue and from Tuesday Morning. The second one is pink and from Amazon. I hate Jeff Bezos, but I love Grimes* and my pink journal. One of the bonkiest things in my pink journal to this day is an old southwest airlines snack pack, already devoured may I add. I probably wrote about how delicious it was.

From journaling I learn about myself, my skills and my weaknesses. Did you know eighth graders talk like they’re going to implode at any minute? I did. I was one who documented it. I believe more people need to document their life. Just not too publicly, only for future you and to reduce anxiety.

*This author knows that Grimes is married to Elon Musk not Jeff Bezos, she just wanted to add it for ambiance.
